PROVIDENT LIVING

Editor: Julianna Johnson
Co-Editors:  Relief Society Presidency
We accept any thoughts or suggestions from anyone

As we come upon the season of giving as a provident living committee we would like to remind you of the direction from our leaders on spending.  In the "All is Safely Gathered In:Family Finances"  it says  "We urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt….."

Provident Living is “Preparing for the ups and downs of life.”  Robert D. Hales

In Provident Living there are 7 different categories.  As we look at each category we should ask ourselves how can we better prepare for what the Lord wants for us. Everything that is on this list can be found on http://providentliving.org/?lang=eng.

                Education
Under education it talk about the Perpetual Education fund, Education and Literacy, and Seminary/Institute.

                Employment
Under the Employment options you can find 3 different kind of helps. 1- Job Seeker  2- Student   3- Self employed.  There is something for every person who is seeking help in a job of some sort.  Under Job Seeker it has links to articles about all different kinds of problems. Not being able to find a job out of College, You’re Old, So What, Working a Job Fair. Researching a Company you want to work for.

                Food Storage
On this page we can learn about  the 3 month supply, Water storage, and Financial Reserve.  This is one that we focus on a lot because it is something approachable and easy to talk about.  This is very important for a number of reasons ie: For adversity in life whether it be yours or others that you can help.  One thing that we forget is not to go overboard on our preparations.  Basic needs are what we are aiming for not financial debt.

                Finances
Under this Topic they talk about first and foremost pay your Tithes and Offerings.  I know that if this is done you will be financially stable.  It doesn’t matter whether you are rich or below poverty if you pay your tithes and offerings you will be financially stable.  Second Avoid Debt.  They give some nuts and bolts on this topic with a financial calculator and a personal finance course.  Next is Using a budget. They offer a Budget worksheet available in the “One for the Money” pamphlet.  If you would like one of these I have some available.   Build a reserve.  This is also important and is listed under Food Storage.  Last but not least is to Teach Family Members.  I think this is one that isn’t taught very often.  It has become such a problem with the growing generation that it is a required course before you can graduate.  Sad that we leave it up to the School system to teach such a important concept.

                Emergency Preparedness
This is another one that we talk of frequently.  It is also very important and I hope to touch on this a tiny bit. They talk about Family Emergency Planning (part of this is covered in Food Storage and Finances), Disaster Clean-Up and Church volunteer Safety, Emergency Communications, Ward and Stake Emergency Plans, and Meetinghouses as Emergency Shelters.

                 Gardening
This is one that I hope to be able to touch on in the spring and early summer.  On the Web site it talks about Planning a garden and Container gardening.  There are so many different ways to garden that this could be a fun one to explore

                Physical Health
This one Surprised me (although I don’t know why).  Take care of yourself. This talks about many aspects of Physical Health.  The Word of Wisdom and Physical Health, Nutrition and Diet, exercise and Fitness, Sleep and Rest, Managing Personal Health, Basic Physical Health with Limited Resources, Health Fairs Promote Good Health.  Because this is one that isn’t often talked about in regards to Provident Living this is where we want to focus on for the time being.

Please take  a min when you can and explore the Provident Living Website.

Provident Living: Physical Health
As a committee we have decided to put focus on our Physical Health.  Each Week we will have a new idea to share with you about the many aspects of Physical Health.  Sleep and Rest:  This is very important in D&C 88:124 it says “Cease to be idle; cease to be unclean; cease to find fault one with another; cease to sleep longer than is needful; retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated.”  From the Provident Living Site I quote “Lack of adequate rest has become a significant health problem for many people.  The brain and body need sufficient, regular sleep to recover from the stresses of each day and to bring order to mind and body functions.”  There are conditions which make it hard to get a good nights sleep.  Keep posted for more info on Sleep.

Dear Subscribers,

The online Family Canning signups for chicken and pork chunks have been taken off line.

      - We cannot make changes to the ordered amounts.

      - All cancellations and scheduling must now be done by calling the Cannery @ 801-785-0998 starting @ 9am, Tuesday,
October 9th.  You may call for available shifts through October 18th.

There are several shifts available. We have had to add a 7am shift on October 17th & 18th and are needing 6 people on each of those shifts. You must be able to lift about 40 lbs to sign up for the 7am shift. We also have several other shifts throughout the days we have scheduled.

Scheduling by phone takes a lot longer to complete. Please help us handle your requests quickly by knowing the following items:

                      * which day you would like to come. (Available dates are October 10-12, 16-18)

                      * how many cases of each meat you will want to order (The maximum number of cases is 5, a total between both kinds of meat.
(Chicken: $43.20/case of 24 cans, Pork: $57.60/case of 24 cans. All cans are 14.5 oz.)

Personal Finance (Provident Living)
I found the website for the BYU lessons on finance. Boy does the site have everything. The address is personalfinance.byu.edu. There are lessons beginning, intermediate and advance lessons, as well as 9 lessons listed under Tools and Resources--Becoming Provident Providers. There is information on basic budgeting, taxes, retirement, charitable giving. It is a great site.

Thanks,
Gail Carmen
